Cosmetics and liquid products are among the most challenging items to ship internationally. Many contain pressurized ingredients or fall under dangerous goods classification. Most standard freight forwarders simply refuse to handle them.
At CrossBorder Freight, we have the expertise and channels to ship ordinary liquids and powders safely — skincare, shampoo, cream, powder cosmetics, and more. Please note: we do NOT ship alcohol-based products (perfumes, colognes, nail polish with high alcohol content, or alcoholic beverages). Here is what you need to know.
Why Are Cosmetics and Liquids Restricted?
Several factors make cosmetics and liquids difficult to ship:
- Flammability: Alcohol-based products (perfumes, colognes, high-alcohol toners) are classified as Class 3 flammable liquid — we do NOT accept these items
- Leakage risk: Liquid products can leak during transit, damaging other cargo
- Pressure changes: Air pressure changes during air freight can cause containers to expand or burst
- Regulatory restrictions: Different countries have varying regulations on importing cosmetics and chemical products
Types of Restricted Cosmetics
NOT Accepted (Alcohol-Based Products)
- Perfumes and colognes (high alcohol content)
- Alcoholic beverages of any kind
- High-alcohol toners and astringents
Highly Restricted (Require DG Handling)
- Nail polish and nail polish remover (acetone-based)
- Aerosol products (hairspray, deodorant)
- Essential oils in large quantities
Moderately Restricted (Special Packaging Required)
- Liquid foundations and serums
- Skincare products (toners, essences)
- Hair care products (shampoo, conditioner)
- Liquid makeup removers
Generally Accepted
- Powder cosmetics (foundation powder, eyeshadow)
- Solid skincare (soap bars, solid shampoo)
- Cream-based products (moisturizers, creams in tubes)
DG Documentation Requirements
For cosmetics classified as dangerous goods, specific documentation is required:
- Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods: Required for all DG shipments by air
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): Provides detailed information about the product's chemical composition
- UN number assignment: Based on the product's classification (e.g., UN1266 for perfumery products)
- Packing instruction compliance: Must follow IATA packing instructions for the specific DG class
Leak-Proof Packaging Methods
Proper packaging is essential for cosmetics shipping. Our packaging process includes:
- Sealed bags: Each liquid product is placed in a sealed plastic bag to contain any leaks
- Absorbent material: Absorbent padding is placed around liquid containers to soak up potential leaks
- Cushioning: Bubble wrap and foam cushioning prevent impact damage
- Upright orientation: Packages are marked to keep upright during transport
- Double-boxing: High-risk liquids are double-boxed for extra protection
